Planning a Trip to Lapland With Kids

If your average shopping mall Santa isn’t up to scratch for the kids this year, then it’s time to look further afield for that Christmas sparkle. Queue a guaranteed white Christmas with Santa, Rudolph and the gang in picturesque Lapland. Yet with a bundle of companies to choose from, plus your hectic work schedule, planning the perfect trip can be a bit of a headache.

So here’s a few of our top tips to break it down and make it a family Christmas holiday to remember.

Planning your stay

First up you need to think of both your time and your budget. The festive period is an expensive one altogether, and that applies to dream trips to Lapland too. If you’re looking to minimise costs that doesn’t mean you have to rule out Christmas holidays to Lapland entirely. A number of touring companies recognise that the holidays are a busy time and can now offer the convenience of a one day trip that’ll still reignite the kids’ love of all things Christmas, including a meet ‘n’ greet with the big man himself. If you’d rather take things at a leisurely pace, there are extended options from two nights or more in a cosy log cabin for all the family.

Making an itinerary

Create a list of everything you and the kids want to do once there. Aside from paying a visit to Santa, there are plenty of activities to do. Sledging is something that the whole family can enjoy, especially with such snow hill surroundings. You can then go reindeer spotting and be pulled around by Rudolph and co on while you sit in a sleigh. For a speedy mode of transport the adults can try a snowmobile and cut through the plains. Check to see the local companies that provide these opportunities (and more!) then see if you need to make any bookings in advance. Itā€™s also worth packing thermals and even snowsuits for such pastimes as youā€™ll be outside for longer than you think. Indoors you can sit by a log fire and eat local delicacies like ā€˜squeaky cheeseā€™ or cloudberry jam.
